Paul Merwart

Born in 1855 as Paweł in Marianówce, Poland
Died in 1902 on the island Martinique, in the Carribean
Painter, illustrator and designer of stamps.

He painted portraits, genre scenes, paintings inspired by the Bible, literature and music. As an illustrator, has worked for French and Polish magazines.
In 1896 he was appointed painter of the French Department of the Colonies. He made ​​numerous trips to the French colonies in Africa. Under the influence of these travels in his work appeared exotic themes. He designed stamps for several French colonies, for instance Côte Française des Somalis (now Djibouti).
