Battle of Orsha

The Battle of Orsha (Polish: Bitwa pod Orszą) took place on 8 September 1514. It was fought between the allied forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland, under the command of Grand Hetman Konstanty Ostrogski on one side and the army of the Grand Duchy of Moscow under Ivan Chelyadnin on the other side.

Lithuanians and Poles succeeded in taking the Russian camp and the capture of many Russian dignitaries and commanders. Despite the tactical victory, the strategic significance of the battle remained low, since the aim of the Polish-Lithuanian campaign, the reconquest of lost a month earlier at Moscow previous Smolensk, could not be reached. The battle is important to Lithuania, because it is the biggest military victory of Lithuania over Russia. The oldest source of information, the Austrian Baron Sigismund von Herberstein, wrote that 30.000 man from the Lithuanian-Polish army defeated a Moscovian army from 80.000. Modern historians believe that the difference between the armies was much smaller.
