Battle of Khotyn (1621)

Not to be confused with the Battle of Khotyn (1673).
The Battle of Khotyn (Chocim in Polish) was a combined siege and series of battles between a Polish-Lithuanian army with Cossack allies, commanded by the Grand Hetman of Lithuania Jan Karol Chodkiewicz and the invading Ottoman Imperial army, led by Sultan Osman II.
The fight took place between September 2 and October 9, 1621 and was stopped after the fall of the first autumn snows. On October 9 the Ottomans abandoned their siege. They did end the battle because of the start of the winter, their heavy losses and because of the failed assaults on Polish-Lithuanian fortifications.
Chodkiewicz died on 24 September 1621 shortly after concluding a treaty with the Turks. In the Commonwealth and among het Cossacks the stopping of the huge Ottoman army was seen as a great victory.
