Jan Czerski

Famous geologist, a palaeontologist and a geographer
Czerskis life started on the country seat of Swołn in the region Witebsk, which now belongs to Belarus. Because he participated in the January Rising of 1863, he was send to Siberia and he was condemned to join the army. He settled in Irkutsk. In a short time he became one of the most famous scientists in the region.
As a member of the Siberian branch of the Geographic Society he made in the years 1871-1883 some journeys to East Siberia.

One of the highest mountains of North East Siberia is called after Czerski. His name was also given to a mountain-pass and a waterfall in the Charok river in the river-basin of the Angara.
