Stanisław Leszczyński

Born: October 20, 1677 in Lwów, Ukraine
Died: February 23, 1766 in Lunéville, France
King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Duke of Lorraine

Beacause of a continuing series of conflicts between the powers of northern Europe Stanisław Leszczyński was two times elected as king of Poland, in 1704 and in 1733. Under Russian pressure he was both times forced to give up the throne and to flee to France. After the first attemp he settled in the French province of Alsace. In 1725 his daughter Maria married Louis XV of France. After the second return to France Stanisław was allowed to keep his royal title and became the last duke of Lorraine and Bar.
In Lorraine, his court at Lunéville became famous as a cultural centre. He also founded an academy of science at Nancy and a military college. He ordered the construction of a central squary in Nancy, the Place Stanislas. Today, this square is the most attractive touristic spot of the city. - More information
